What is involved in treatment?
Botulinum Toxin Type A (BOTOX®, DYSPORT®) treatment involves a series of small injections designed to relax facial muscles. Relaxation of the injected muscles begins to be apparent after 2-3 days with the peak effect being reached after 7-14 days. Results can last 3-6 months, and the desired effect longevity cannot be guaranteed. Results vary with each individual person and treatment. Treatment results are temporary in order to maintain results treatments on a regular basis are necessary. The procedure can be repeated after 3 months; however, injections given at less than 3-month intervals may not produce a noticeable effect.
How do Anti-wrinkle injections work?
Botulinum Toxin Type A, is a neurotoxin that is used for various medical and cosmetic purposes. It works by temporarily blocking the signals between nerve cells and muscles, which leads to a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Here's a step-by-step explanation of how it works:
Nerve signals: Our muscles move in response to signals sent by our nerves. These signals are transmitted through a chemical messenger called acetylcholine. When a nerve wants a muscle to contract, it releases acetylcholine at the nerve-muscle junction.
Binding to Receptors: Acetylcholine binds to receptors on the surface of muscle cells. This binding triggers a series of events that ultimately lead to muscle contraction.
Botulinum Toxin Type A Intervention: When Botulinum Toxin Type A is injected into specific muscles, it acts as a neuromuscular blocker. It doesn't allow the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings.
Inhibition of Muscle Contraction: Since acetylcholine cannot bind to its receptors, the muscle does not receive the signal to contract. This results in temporary muscle relaxation.
Visible Effects: As the treated muscles relax, wrinkles and lines on the skin above them become less pronounced. This is why Botox is often used in cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, particularly in areas like the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes.
Temporary Nature: It's important to note that the effects of Botox are temporary. Over time, the nerve-muscle connection will gradually recover, and muscle function will return to normal. This typically occurs within a few months.
Repeat Treatments: To maintain the desired results, clients may need to receive periodic Botox injections. The frequency of these injections can vary depending on individual factors and the specific treatment area
Alternative treatments
Alternative forms of non-surgical management for the appearance of wrinkles and lines in the skin include: Collagen Induction Therapy (Skin Needling), cosmetic skin peels, dermal fillers, LED Light Therapy, and skin care products. Alternative forms of treatment are all associated with certain risks.
Potential side effects
Every procedure involves a certain amount of risk, and it is important that you understand the risks involved. An individual’s choice to undergo a procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit. Although the majority of patients do not experience these side effects, you should discuss each of them with your nurse to make sure you understand the risks, potential complications, and consequences of Botulinum Toxin Type A injections.
Side effects to treatment include but are not limited to:
Rare:
Brow Ptosis or Lid Ptosis (Drooping of the Eyelid or Eyebrow): This is a temporary complication occurring in 1-2% of patients. Usually naturally resolves in 1 – 6 weeks.
Headache: Related to the actual injections, is usually mild and transient, last less than 24 hours. You may take Paracetamol post treatment to relieve symptoms.
Common:
Bruising: Usually resolves in 3-4 days. Avoid Aspirin and anti-inflammatories before appointment.
Local temporary swelling: Caused from fluid sitting in the muscle.

Before Care - Pre-treatment
Prior to the treatment, you will be sent a consultation form to fill out, this will help your treating nurse determine if there is anything specific we require you to do i.e stop particular medications or supplements, and to make sure there aren't any contraindications prior to treatment.
Also, it will Inform your treating nurse about any allergies, medical conditions, medications, or previous cosmetic procedures you have undergone.
Medications and supplements
If you are taking any blood-thinning medication, or supplements (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil) discontinuing them 7 days before the treatment to reduce the risk of bruising. If you require blood-thinning medication for medical purposes please state this on your consultation form.
Alcohol, smoking and caffeine
Refrain from consuming alcohol, smoking, and caffeine for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as these activities can increase the risk of bruising and swelling.
Exercise
Refrain from strenuous exercise the day of your treatment as these activities can increase the risk of bruising and swelling.
Skin preparation
Avoid any harsh skincare treatments (e.g., chemical peels, microdermabrasion) in the treatment area for at least two weeks prior to your appointment. This will ensure that your skin is in the ideal state for a cosmetic procedure.
We prefer you come with a fresh, clean face without make-up.
Results
Treatments take up to 14 days to take full effect, in some rare instances 3 weeks. If after two weeks you would like a "top up" this can be assessed and extra product injected (at an additional cost) to the area if necessary.
The effect of treatment is temporary and will be required to be repeated every 3-4 months.
It may take a few treatments to see a resolution of deep lines and wrinkles.
Treatment can only improve lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement, if the lines and wrinkles are not caused by muscle movement then anti-wrinkle injections will not improve these lines, your treating nurse will discuss treatment outcomes during your consultation.
Dermal Filler
Treatment Details
Treatment information
Dermal filler products are sterile gels that consist of hyaluronic acid [HA]. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to correct lines, wrinkles and folds and can be used to sculpt lips and contour the face. Dermal fillers can be used to restore elasticity to the skin and reduce some skin surface irregularities.
Results
Results can be seen immediately post treatment. But, Final result can be evident 4 weeks post treatment once the filler has settled into the treated area/s.
The effects of dermal filler treatment can last 6-12 months, but this period may vary from person to person and depends on the area treated and the volume injected. Follow up treatment may be necessary to create the desired effect. Treatment results are temporary in order to maintain results treatments on a regular basis are necessary. Any additional treatments required will be an additional cost to you.

An individual’s choice to undergo a procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit. Side effects to treatment include but are not limited to:
Common:
Swelling, redness, tenderness, pain, itching, and bruising.
Rare:
Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity to lignocaine). Some dermal filler products contain lignocaine and must not be used on individuals with known hypersensitivity to lignocaine or amide-type local anaesthetic agents.
Infection at injection site.
Reversible skin discoloration at the injection site.
Vascular occlusion - rare and reversible when detected early. Vascular occlusion occurs when a vessel has been occluded by the filler, this occlusion starves the surrounding skin of oxygen, which can result in degeneration of the surrounding tissue.
